mathematical equation Jayna Gandhi, 20, Luton, is studying the BSc (Hons) Mathematics.

I have always had an interest in Maths, as well as a talent for the subject. My ambition is to pursue a career in finance, most likely accountancy. Rather than specialising my degree from the start, I thought it would be more beneficial to obtain a general degree and then specialise in finance later on, possibly through a graduate scheme that offers a CIMA or ACCA qualification.

I chose Glamorgan as it was high in the league tables for Maths. It was a long way from home so it was a big risk for me, but I have not once regretted my decision. Meeting so many new people has made me feel so welcome and everyone has been so friendly.

The modules you study on the maths degree are all extremely interesting and varied. My forte is by far the pure modules, the messy type of maths! I have found the more applied modules so much fun, in particular Cryptography – the study of hiding information and creating secret messages, as well as figuring out secret messages. This module has a mix of history and the maths behind it that keeps it interesting. I have also mastered several new computer software packages, such as Witness Simulation, IBM SPSS and Xpress-MP, all of which are widely used in industry.

My lecturers are kind, friendly and always willing to help. They go that extra mile, if you don’t understand something you can just go and see them. If they are not free they arrange a time for you to come back.

The highlight of the maths degree so far has been being around people who share the same enthusiasm for maths as me. Also, being given the opportunity to study topics that you wouldn’t necessarily think to be maths but are because of the planning and calculations involved.
