About the Faculty
The Faculty of Advanced Technology offers a diverse array of courses from Aircraft Maintenance Engineering and Quantity Surveying to Computer Forensics and Mathematics. Located on the main Treforest Campus we have 155 academic staff, over 150 courses, more than 3,700 students, 1,555 part time students, 525 international students and 165 research students.
Employability
Our courses have been designed with employability in mind covering the full academic and vocational spectrum. The fast-pace of modern life means we are continually updating and improving our courses and the ways in which they are taught to help prepare our students for their professional lives.
Innovative new courses such as Computer Systems Engineering, Computer Games Development and Aircraft Maintenance Engineering are providing highly skilled and well-rounded graduates in sectors with strong demand.
Professional accreditation
A large proportion of our courses are professionally accredited by the associated body such as the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the British Computer Society (BCS) to name a few. These accreditations and our close links with highly regarded industry players such as IBM, Orange, Microsoft, Costain and Stradform etc ensure our courses reflect the latest industry requirements.
Teaching expertise
We are very proud of our heritage, starting life as the School of Mines in 1913, educating the coal pit managers from across South Wales. We still place great importance on teaching methods and the expertise of our academic and technical staff. Our excellent performance in the recent Research Assessment Exercise 2008 ensures our students are benefiting from learning the latest subject developments from academic experts within their field.
Facilities
The University is currently embarking on a £130m investment programme in new buildings and facilities. The Faculty of Advanced Technology is benefiting from this in the form of a brand new Aircraft Maintenance Centre including our very own commercial jet on Campus, in Treforest. This will complete our aerospace provision, following the addition of our flight simulator, gas turbine engine and wind tunnel earlier this year.
Our Computer Systems Engineering students will also benefit from a brand new embedded systems lab and the Games Development Lab is also being updated with the latest hardware and software. These developments are in addition to the existing industry-standard facilities the Faculty operates including civil and mechanical engineering testing labs, lighting design studios and electronics signal and communications labs.
Research
We are rated amongst the top 15 universities for General Engineering in the UK (Times Higher Education’s RAE2008 league table). We also provided the largest Computing submission in Wales (RAE2008), with Computer Science being recognised as one of the top seven new universities (Research Fortnight’s Power Rankings).
Our research and Knowledge Transfer (KT) activity has enabled us to develop three leading areas of consultancy with the Faculty, within the fields of engineering, electronics and computing:
